Inspiration found in places visited

Photographer John Temple captures nature at its finest. He shares his passion for Tasmania and beyond at his Westbury gallery. ISABEL BIRD spoke with him.

What type of art medium do you work in?

Wilderness and landscape photography. Almost always colour.

Describe your style in two- three words?

Large landscapes.

How long have you been in photography?

Full time photography for 15 years - I loved it - It is not always something that I have wanted to do but I didn't realise I always wanted to do it.

I got my first camera when I was six.

I was given it for my birthday and I had used my father's since I was three.

Photography was part of his work from time to time.

Who has influenced your work?

John Loxton.

He was a Melbourne watercolour painter in the early to mid 20th century.

What has influenced your work?

The natural beauty in the world in general and Tasmania in particular.

Is there any particular place that has inspired you?

There are some wonderful places and there are some that have more to offer than others, but you can't narrow it down to one single place.

Is there any particular piece that you could not bear to part with or that stands out as your favourite creation?

There is half a dozen really.

One is Cradle Mountain which is absolute first light on January 2000 which turned out to be unrepeatable.

I went back five years and 10 years later and it was impossible.

The first time I went back it was mists and you couldn't see in front of you and 10 years later the wind was howling and there was surf on the lake.

The other one is of an old farmhouse in Borough in South Australia and another one is in Utah.

Have you been to MONA or do you want to go?

I've heard about it, I've heard mixed reports.

If I happened to be there I might, but there are other galleries around that would be higher on my priorities.

If I was there and had a look I might have a different view but I have heard that it is someone trying to be controversial.

Say the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the words:

Colour: Spectrum.

Meander Valley: Green.

Love: Happiness.

Famous artists: Struggle I suppose, because that is what it is.
