Pupils get creative for Father's Day

31 Aug, 2010 10:40 AM
SUMMERDALE Primary School pupils have created a special surprise for dads this Father's Day.

Kindergarten children from Meg Lade's class worked with Bunnings Warehouse Launceston activities organiser Kim Ashdown and in-store trainer Elaine Powell to create memory boards last Wednesday.

The duo came to school with donations of timber and cork tiles for the children to create the gifts for their dads.

The children painted an array of pictures and designs on the boards, including rainbows, garden sheds and portraits of their dads.

Mrs Lade said the activity helped improve many skills for the children.

"The activity helps to develop fine motor skills and their creativity because they paint their own design, as well as improving hand-eye co-ordination," she said.

"We have been talking about why fathers have Father's Day and what dads do, and I thought it would be nice to have people from Bunnings to come to help the children create something.

"It's a gift for dad to celebrate the importance of fathers."

Mrs Ashdown said the children decorated the timber board cut-out and then glued the cork tile on.

"I think all parents like getting something their kids have made themselves, something a little bit personal that they've actually created," she said.

"We love doing it, it's great fun and the kids love it.

"As soon as they see the red (Bunnings) tops, so many of them get excited because they come up to Bunnings."
