Well-being focal point for group's members

22 Jun, 2010 10:30 AM
THE newly formed Meander Valley centre for health and well-being has put out a call for members.

The group, which was set up to develop healthcare projects in the Meander Valley, has been responsible for projects such as the community day centre, community garden and community shed.

The group is now looking for more members to become involved in its projects.

Deloraine District Hospital community health professional T.J. Howe said the group had completed a number of big budget projects, but now wanted to focus on more community-minded ideas.

"We want to do that by running these projects ourselves and by assisting community groups to develop them," Mr Howe said.

"The issue for us is that, as a community group, we want to get more members of the community involved."

Mr Howe said the group was looking to recruit more members to assist in a proactive role and to actively help the community.

"At the moment, we only have five members of the committee, but we are very keen to get some new blood and some new ideas," he said.

"A lot of people worry about community health programs and assume that they are all about 10-kilometre runs and things like that.

"We are more focused on connecting the community together in a fun way that promotes good health."

Some of the main events that the group was involved in last year included the world's worst choir competition, the Meander Valley Crazy Billycart Race and the Drumbeat program.

"One of the biggest programs that we did was called Photovoice and that encouraged people to address important issues through photos," he said.

"It also helped people to express themselves, and become part of a group."
